Over 1,020 Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Fall candidates for graduation are expected to cross the stage in two ceremonies scheduled at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9 at the Sames Auto Arena.

The 11 a.m. ceremony will be for undergraduate and graduate candidates for degrees from the College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest.  The 4 p.m. ceremony will be for undergraduate and graduate candidates for degrees from the University’s other Colleges or Schools, including the A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business, College of Education, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and University College. Both ceremonies  include candidates  for graduation from the Fall semester and Summer graduates.

Dr. Norma Elia Cantú, the Norine R. and T. Frank Murchison Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Trinity University in San Antonio, will be the Commencement speaker.  A TAMIU alum and former long-time faculty member at the University, she serves as the President of the American Folklore Society, and is Professor Emerita in English at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

As founder and director of the Society for the Study of Gloria Anzaldúa, she organized El Mundo Zurdo, a gathering of Anzalduístas from 2007-2019. She is a folklorist, scholar, poet, and novelist whose scholarly and creative focus is on the US-México borderlands.

Her most recent publications include the novel, Cabañuelas; Meditación Fronteriza: Poems of Love, Life, and Labor and the co-edited anthologies Entre Guadalupe y Malinche: Tejanas in Literature and Art; meXicana Fashions: Politics, Self-Adornment, and Identity Construction; Teaching Gloria Anzaldúa: Pedagogies for our Classrooms and Communities, and the Critical Edition of Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza.

The use of facemasks at all TAMIU Commencement Exercises is highly recommended, as is social distancing.  Those attending should familiarize themselves with event safety guidelines and protocols, including bag restrictions in place by the host, the Sames Auto Arena.

Registration for Spring Semester 2022 is underway. Classes begin Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022.  Late registration ends Monday, Jan. 24, 2022.
